Rockstar let a terminally ill fan play GTA 6 before launch

In December, Anthony Armstrong, a UI integrator at Ubisoft Toronto, wrote a post on LinkedIn about a family member who had been fighting cancer for years and had just been told they had somewhere between six and twelve months left.

They were a lifelong Grand Theft Auto player. The arithmetic was not complicated: the game they had waited years for was going to arrive after they were gone.

The post travelled

It reached the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, who opened the conversation with Rockstar directly. Armstrong later posted that he had spoken to his family member and had great news. Reporting at the time indicated Rockstar had granted early access under a non-disclosure agreement, which is why no screenshots, details or footage ever surfaced from it.

The story picked up widely in January 2026.

Why it lands

Rockstar is a studio that says almost nothing publicly, guards its work obsessively, and has never handed out an early build for goodwill.

That last part is worth sitting with. This is a company that pursued the people who leaked footage in 2022 through the courts, that went back to Discord for data on the leakers years afterwards, and that has kept an unreleased build of the most anticipated game of the decade inside its own walls for six years. An unreleased Rockstar build is one of the most tightly held objects in the industry.

Someone asked anyway, and the answer was yes, quietly, with no announcement attached and nothing to gain from it.

The NDA is the part that proves it

It would have been trivially easy to turn this into marketing. A short film, a statement, a hashtag. Plenty of companies would have, and the coverage would have been warm.

Instead the access came with a non-disclosure agreement and nothing came out of it at all. No footage leaked, no details circulated, and the only reason anybody knows it happened is that the person who made the original request said so. A gesture that is designed to stay invisible is a different kind of gesture from one that is designed to be seen.

The thing this is not

It is not a policy, and it is not a precedent anybody should plan around. Rockstar has not opened a channel for requests like this and there is no reason to think it will.

It also sits oddly against the rest of the studio's public posture, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The same company that did this has been uncompromising about leaks and says nothing to its audience for months at a time. Both things are true.

Out of respect for the family, the person at the centre of it has not been named publicly, and we are not going looking. This entry exists because it is a matter of record, not because there is more to find out.
